Baas Michael Scott (Steve Carell) leidt de firma Dunder-Mifflin Paper Company in Scranton, Pennsylvania. Hij gelooft dat hij de beste baas is die iemand zich maar kan wensen en probeert er op alle mogelijke manieren voor te zorgen dat zijn werknemers gemotiveerd blijven. Helaas doet hij dit niet op de meest 'motiverende' manier: hij schoffeert, beledigt en bespot zijn medewerkers dat het een lieve lust is. Ondertussen vindt hij zichzelf ook nog enorm grappig wat de irritatiegraad nog wat doet stijgen.
