Ayano is the heir to the house of Kannagi, a house with ties to the spirit of fire whose members are all fire users. All except for her cousin, Kazuma. After he was defeated by Ayano, his father banished him from the house in disgrace. Kazuma runs off and changes his surname to Yagami. He forms a contract with the spirit of wind and becomes a powerful wind user. 4 years later, he returns. Some killings in the Kannagi house by a powerful wind user lead Ayano and the Kannagi house into thinking Kazuma is taking revenge. Although claiming to be innocent, Kazuma is preparing for an all out war with Kannagi.

Kazuma, Ayano and Ren encounter Lapis, who begins the summoning ritual of Belial, the King of Demons. Lapis reveals she is attempting to become "human" through others' pain. Kazuma and Ayano attack Lapis, who retreats as Belial's summoning proceeds. By combining their powers, Kazuma, Ayano, and Ren manage to repel Belial. Afterwards, Burnheart and Lapis arrival, but Gemna's arrival convinces Burnheart not to kill them. Kazuma asks Lapis what were the final thoughts of Tsui-Ling, who reveals that Tsui-Ling wanted Kazuma to die. At the Kannagi residence, Kazuma reveals he has accepted his past and will concentrate on the future, which incenses Ayano, who claims that Kazuma should rely on her. Kazuma agrees, but gives Ayano a tap in the rear to show his acceptance to the new partnership, resulting in Ayano angrily chasing him around the courtyard as the members of the Kannagi family, Ren's and Ayano's friends, and Tachibana look on amused how close the two are.
