De serie speelt zich af ongeveer 58 jaar voor de gebeurtenissen uit Battlestar Galactica (2003). Centraal in de serie staan de Graystones, een familie bestaande uit vader Daniel, een computergenie, moeder Amanda, een briljante arts en hun dochter Zoe en de Adama’s. Twee families die lijnrecht tegenover elkaar staan in de beslissingen die leiden tot het creeren van de Cylons: intelligente robots die in de toekomst bijna de hele bevolking van Caprica zal uitroeien.
