A security van transporting half a million pounds of used notes is ambushed by a group of men wearing wolf masks. The security van is forced into the back of a trailer and the trailer drives away with the security van. One of the security guards is murdered. Makepeace is disagreeing with Spikings' decision to permanantly pair her with Dempsey. Spikings points out to Makepeace that Dempsey is only with SI-10 for 12 months. Dempsey and Makepeace set out to discover who ambushed the security van and murdered the security guard. Helping them in their investigation is Gloria, one of Makepeace's informants. She is also a prostitute. Gloria's information leads Dempsey and Makepeace to a barge owned by Sammy Bryce. the barge is being used to hide the security van. Bryce's partner, Jimmy Reynolds, was involved in the ambush of the van. Reynolds has contacts with two Maltese cousins, Mikel and Chentzu Spiceri. They own a scrapyard with Reynolds.
